Cand fan will allow you to connect to the source of life, and purify you in depth and reconnect you to the wisdom of Spirit.
The feather fan is used to direct smoke towards oneself or others, but also to spread it over medicine objects. Native Americans often use feathers from eagles and other sacred birds, but feathers from any local bird will do. These are attached to a wooden handle, covered in leather or soft cloth, decorated with beads and adorned with symbols specific to the shaman.
Fumigation is used to purify a place or people with smoke from sacred herbs. The herbs used for this are sage, cedar, and sweetgrass ( Hiérocloé odorante ). These herbs can be placed in a container (such as a shallow bowl or an open shell) where they can burn without causing any damage, or tied into a bundle in the shape of a stick that can be held and lit. The smoke from the herbs is then directed by the feather fan towards the person(s) or object to be purified. Sage smoke chases away negative energies, and cedar attracts positive energies. sweetgrass itself brings a sacred influence.
The person being fumigated draws the smoke towards them, as if they were picking it up with their hands, first towards the heart, then above the head, and finally towards the feet.
The eye of the medicine man
The meaning of the symbol the eye of the medicine man is a very powerful symbol. A Shaman is supposed to have magical powers of Spiritual Healing and to see the future. The outer lines of the symbol represent the four corners of the Universe - the North, South, East and West of the physical world. The inner lines represent the world of the Spirits, of which the Shaman had knowledge. The centre circle represents the Shamans eye and his spiritual vision.
